CoOPERAtività, which is part of the LIGET program, is a project by Opera of Santa Maria del Fiore in partnership with "RSA Le Magnolie" and the "Casa di Riposo C.S.D. Il Gignoro ", designed to help people suffering with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia and caring for them.
The project aims, through dialogue-based activities and creative narration carried out in the Museum and in the monuments of the Opera of Santa Maria del Fiore to reach a series of objectives: promotion of well-being, expression, management and sharing of emotions, finding new forms of communication, generating opportunities for social inclusion by breaking down the stigma surrounding people with cognitive impairment and their families, integrating them into a network of cultural and social support.
The name CoOPERAtività (CoOPERAtivity) is the joining of several words: is linked to collaboration, as a set of experiences, skills, stories, emotions and thoughts, to the name of the institution Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore and finally to creativity as well as industriousness, proactive living, an important element to be stimulated daily in the lives of elderly people in particular, but also in everyone else.
The staff is composed of two museum operators, two animators with geriatrics qualifications, a psychologist and a photographer, to testify and evaluate qualitatively and quantitatively the development and planning of the activities.
On Wednesdays, from 3.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m., four rounds of meetings are scheduled from January to April (first session) and from September to December (second session); each meeting consists of two different activities.
The first meeting is dedicated to the free and personal interpretation of a work of art or of an environmental context, through stimulation by the experiment leader of the individual expressions of each participant, of the sensations, of the thoughts and the emotions that can arise according to one's own sensibility and experience, without preconceptions or limits. In this activity we repeat it many times: there is no right or wrong, and you do not need to have a historical-artistic culture, but rather you have the freedom to listen and to express yourself without having to resort to knowledge, explanations or pre-established information, and regardless of previous memories.
Through the instrument of the Time Slips , during the meeting we try to avoid the anxiety and the dynamics related to the performance effort, to create a serene atmosphere, more open to creative comments without constraints.
A transcriber will note down and re-elaborate all the remarks of the participants so that a sort of co-written poem or story will be born and then read aloud in the final phase of the activity.
Another tool used is the "Inventafavole" (Fairy-tale-maker) which leads the participants to invent a story using the pictures that reproduce the works of the Museum.
The second meeting can be regarded as further research and deepening of the first, as it starts with the same tools then explores further the relationship between caregiver and senior, and the communication of emotions through not only the language, but also the gestures following impromptu suggestions and ideas.
In addition to the afternoons dedicated to the activities, two operators and caregiver only meetings are scheduled: one for preparation and another for consultation, discussion and construction of new practices together. During these meetings we will also hand out souvenir albums.
The meetings are free but the number of participants is limited to ensure full focus on the participation and hence success in the events.
